Ruth B曾旷课后去看偶像蕾哈娜的演唱会，演唱会却已经结束了。迷路的她被警察带到父亲面前，父亲打了她一个耳光，说她这辈子都是个穷人的女儿，就像她是一个黑人一样无法改变。她在卧室哭了一夜。因为穷，她被同学孤立。为了证明自己，她写下了这首歌。
